Ocean Hackathon®: data, an event and an international community
Ocean Hackathon® is a non-stop, 48-hour event where teams develop prototypes and explore their practical applications using marine data. Several months before the event, a call for challenges is issued to gather project proposals from participating towns and cities. The event culminates in a weekend where teams compete, and the top team from each location advances to the International Grand Finale in Brest, France. Winners have the chance to receive prizes sponsored by our Ocean Hackathon® Ambassadors.
Since its inception in 2016 in Brest, Ocean Hackathon® has fostered a growing community about ocean conservation and digital innovation. In 2019, the event expanded to additional locations across France and internationally.

Ocean Hackathon® is an initiative led by Campus mondial de la mer that promotes collaboration, the adoption of new digital technologies, and an entrepreneurial mindset. The projects developed aim to optimize the utilisation of marine and maritime data, often through innovative reinterpretations. Data providers actively support the event by improving data accessibility and understanding, and they engage in mentoring participants throughout the process.

About our Ambassadors
The Ambassadors view the ocean as a realm of innovation that should be explored, shared, and safeguarded. They recognize the Ocean Hackathon® initiative as a catalyst for fostering new projects and building an international community inspired by marine data. With both national and international reach, some Ambassadors also serve as data providers. They actively support us and honor the top teams at the International Grand Finale podium. Below are the Ambassadors for 2023:
Cedre
Cedre, international experts in accidental water pollution, undertake five main activities: providing response support, contingency planning, training, conducting analysis and testing, and undertaking research. Cedre is also acknowledged as a resource centre.
CEREMA
CEREMA, a multidisciplinary scientific and technical centre of expertise, supports the development, implementation, and evaluation of public policies in areas such as urban planning, risk prevention, territorial cohesion, energy transition, resource conservation, and road and maritime safety.
French Maritime Cluster
Established in 2006, the French Maritime Cluster (CMF) unites stakeholders across the maritime ecosystem, including industry, services, and various maritime activities. Today, it comprises over 430 entities, encompassing companies of all scales, competitiveness clusters, federations, associations, laboratories, research centres, educational institutions, training organisations, local authorities, economic stakeholders, and the French Navy.
Ifremer
IFREMER, a pioneer in ocean science, conducts cutting-edge research guided by principles of sustainable development and open science. Its mission is to advance scientific knowledge, expertise, and innovation to protect and restore the ocean, sustainably utilize marine resources for societal benefit, and generate and disseminate oceanic data, information, and knowledge.
Mercator Ocean International
Mercator Ocean International has been appointed as an ambassador for the Copernicus Marine Service. As a non-profit organization, Mercator Ocean International focuses on providing ocean science-based services aimed at conserving and sustainably utilizing oceans, seas, and marine resources. The organization implements the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service as part of the European Earth Observation program Copernicus.
The Copernicus Marine Service is dedicated to ocean observation, monitoring, and forecasting. It offers free, open, regular, and systematic reference information on the physical (blue), sea ice (white), and biogeochemical (green) state, variability, and dynamics of the global ocean and European regional seas.

Meteo France
Météo-France serves as the national weather and climate service in France, with its core mission focused on ensuring the meteorological safety of individuals and property. This is achieved through the preparation of a weather vigilance map that highlights hazardous weather phenomena, their impacts, and recommended precautions for public safety. In mainland France, this meteorological vigilance system is complemented by marine bulletins and avalanche risk assessments, while overseas territories benefit from a cyclone monitoring and warning system.
Océanopolis Ocean Discovery Park
Since 1990, Océanopolis has been dedicated to recounting the natural history of the oceans, driven by a mission of scientific mediation through pedagogy and creativity.
Shom
The Shom, which traces its origins to the world's first official hydrographic service in 1720, operates as a public administrative establishment under the supervision of the French Ministry of the Armed Forces. It serves as the primary operator for maritime and coastal geographic information in France.
State Secretariat for the Sea (Secrétariat d'Etat chargé de la mer)
The State Secretariat develops and implements the government's policies concerning the sea, encompassing various national and international aspects such as the environment, maritime economy, and maritime influence.
